Hi! It's Mia! Today, I am doing a TBR shelf blog. I would be talking about what I am going to read in month, June, and what are my expectations of them. It's pretty exciting, June is already here. When I am done editing and posting it, maybe I could've already finished a book or two. My year's going great! Hope it's the same for you.
In June month, I have planned to read 12 books, I am not quite sure if I really could read all of them, because literally… in May, I had too much free time but now since I have a blog which I plan to update often and College prep to do, I am getting uncertain if I could actually do all of these, but hope's definitely not a dangerous thing for a woman like me.
For June, I have three mysteries, one YA contemporary, three fantasies (those are part of a series), one classic, two lgbtq+ reps, one science fiction, and one horror. That's pretty diverse and since I am trying to enhance my library, diverse is good for me.
So, quickly now, I would get to the books!
THE BATTLE OF THE LABYRINTH by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson #4)
The Battle of Labyrinth, fourth book in the Percy Jackson series, is holding up high expectations from my side this month. I actually liked the last book, The Titan's curse (can't remember now what it was about), which I read in April month, unlike the previous two. I thought the series was humorous, I don't believe in Greek mythology and the mix squash of modern world in the plot… just made it sound impossible for me to enjoy. Maybe I still think it's stupid, but I am reading for Percy.
In this book, evil lord Kronos is very near to come in his full form and Camp Half - Blood is in danger. Percy, Annabeth, Grover and Tyson are set to go on a quest, in the vast underground maze, called Labyrinth. They need to go and find the creator of the Labyrinth, who's somewhere within the maze itself, still expanding the maze from his workshop. They need to convince him to help them by not helping Luke, the server of the evil lord, and his army, and deny him to use the Labyrinth as their tool.
I am not sure if I will like it a lot, but I expect at least a 3 star since many people are saying that this is their favourite book of the series. So my hopes are up!
THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak
I have recently decided to read the popular oldies. Last month, I read The Alchemist, this time, I have decided to read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
I don't know a lot about this book except that it's set in 1939, around the time World War II began, in Nazi Germany. So maybe, there's people hiding, terror, and a lot of killings happening. (I am not a history student, so it would be exciting to read about it.) Although, I definitely am not a historical reader, nor I like reading about history… so I can't say what I feel about it right now.
The description says, Leisel's life changes at her brother's grave, where she finds a book. Leisel learns to read and then starts collecting (stealing) books whenever she can find them and develops love for reading books.
I don't have too high of expectations, but if it's anything like The Alchemist, it would be a heavy disappointment.
MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS by Agatha Christie
There's only one more book I read from Agatha Christie, her first book from Hercules Poirot series, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. I didn't like that book much, Poirot was annoying to me because he would never tell his discoveries while we are trying to solve the mystery. He only narrated everything at the end. I didn't like that.
I picked out Murder on the Orient Express because it's one of her famous ones and ratings are amazing for this book. A murder happens on the Orient Express and coincidentally Poirot is travelling in that same train.
I have high hopes from this book at least a 4 star. It gives me Train to Busan vibes so I am pretty excited!!
ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE by Benjamin Alire Saenz
I am squealing about the cover, it's beeeeeeautiful! Aristotle and Dante are two 15 year old kids. Ari is an angry dude whose brother is in prison and Dante is a know-it-all who thinks outside the box. I already wanna open this one, I love the character descriptions.
These two meet, there's no room for topics to talk about but they develop this amazing friendship and discover truths/facts about themselves and those around them. Dante is open about his homosexuality while Ari kinda ignores the fact but these two are thoughtful people and that's amazing 'cause I love people who think and have opinions.
The book promises me friendship, discovery of oneself, family issues and how a person deals with their emotions or feelings towards sexual desires. Oh I love it already!
FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON by Daniel Keyes
Another classic! I don't read a lot of science fiction. Last month, I read my first, Jurassic Park, but that was because of the movie. I picked it up randomly in a "spin-draw". Uptill now, I didn't know a thing about it.
So… Flowers for Algernon is about this man Charlie, who's like, extremely naive (as told to me). He's this stupid guy who believed when others were laughing at him, they were laughing with him. But then a scientific operation is held and that, like a generator, increases Charlie's IQ. He becomes so smart, even smarter than the doctors and engineers who created the scientific operation. This book is written in diary format!! Oh, I love those. Also, it has something else to do with a mouse, that I don't get but okay.
I heard a lot of people saying they cried a lot while reading this, so that sounds like a plus point, since if it makes someone cry, it means the characters and their story make the readers feel something and care about them. This thing matters a lot to me!! I count on it!
FROSTBITE by Richelle Mead (Vampire Academy #2)
Last month, I unexpectedly read the first book of the series, and now I am gonna continue reading. This got me hooked from the first page and I think I am going to stick around.
So… we got a love triangle here! Rose loves her tutor, Dimitri, Dimitri might be into some new character, Tasha, Mason, Rose's best friend, is mad about Rose. Strigoi, the evil immortal vampires, have recently attacked nearby St. Vladmir Academy, so that's alerted everyone and thus the Academy takes everyone to a mandatory ski trip, but the threat of Strigoi's is at its peak and a lots of action, drama, adventure lie ahead.
I don't feel very good about the "love triangles" because among most of them, the potential couple is too obvious, but I can always make some room for a good plot. And, I love thinking about snow!! I should've said I love snow, but I have never experienced it so that's hard luck, lol. Anyway, I am very excited about this one!!
HONEY GIRL by Morgan Rogers
Grace, ecstatic about her PhD in Astronomy, takes a trip to Vegas to celebrate her happy day : the good part. Grace, totally drunk marries a woman she doesn't even know the name of : the unbelievable, stupid part. Grace is a black lesbian woman (wohoo!), who's sick of the heavy expectations of her ex-military father, so she takes a break and flee her home in Portland to spend a summer with her newly wed wife in New York. Grace falls for her wife, while struggling with the load of grown-ups, that is, what she's gonna do in her messed up life?
Do I need to say anything? Ok no.. give me atleast a chef's kiss 4 stars! I am gonna read it!!
IN THE AFTERLIGHT by Alexandra Bracken ( The Darkest Minds #3)
THE DARKEST MINDS NEVER FADE IN THE AFTERLIGHT
I just realised this… OMG! You gotta be kidding me.
I am currently reading three series at the same time, Percy Jackson, The Darkest Minds, Vampire Academy, and this one is what appeals the most to me. It's the last book and I know what's going to happen but how.. it's the question that's keeping me away from sleep at night! I fuckin' love the series and am soooo excited to read this like.. OMG. I have no words.
Barely saved by the attack of the government in Los Angeles, Ruby and the other survivors have to end it. They need to find what caused the IAAN . Clancy Gray, son of the president, is kept hostage with them. Clancy's immensely powerful and only Ruby can control him, but if he slips in any kid's mind, it could create many problems, it could be disastrous to them. The unnatural ones need to stay together in freeing other kids and tell the world what the government is actually conspiring.

IT by Stephen King
Arrrrgghhhhhhhhh… As excited I am to read In The Afterlight, as much I am dreading IT. Reason? The length. I started reading it at the end of April, skipped it to May because how bored I was with it and I will have to push myself like a maniac to finish it. I am in no mood for reading it. It's too slow for me and the thickness is driving me crazy. IT lays a challenge for me, so I hope, I push myself enough.
Derry is a small city which is haunted because of "It". Seven teenagers who first encountered "it", are now grown up men and women who have moved away and are leading a better life but none can withstand, when "it" calls them back to Derry and the nightmare begins once again.
Nooooooooooooo….
THE MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF AIDAN S. (AS TOLD BY HIS BROTHER) by David Levithan
I had to read it last month, but couldn't for my reasons, now I am sure I will do it.
Aidan disappears for six days. Six days, multiple police investigations, searches, questions, but nobody could find him and then he comes back on his own. The story of where Aidan disappeared is anything but believable. Everyone tells him a liar and accused him of running away from home but only his brother believed him. He becomes an outcast at school and people are taunting him. Lucas, his brother, grows concerned for Aidan but how could he believe in the unbelievable?
It sounds interesting to me although the ratings aren't the best.
THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10 by Ruth Ware
Another mystery. I have heard a lot about this one but again the ratings aren't quite good.
Lo is a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, and has got this huge opportunity to be at a luxury cruise for a week! She's super excited and all. Everything sounds pleasant. Day one, she asks the woman in cabin 10 to lend her mascara, the same night she sees the woman's body sinking overboard. And guess what? When she raises the alarm, no one believes her. To her horror, even the mascara's gone missing so she can't explain herself and that there was a woman at all in cabin 10. Or was it all in her head?
I like the plot already and I am excited. It's the third mystery of June month, so I can do a competition about these three!! The expected order is.. The Murder on Orient Express > The Woman in Cabin 10 > The Mysterious Disappearance of Aidan S. (as told by his brother). Let's see if the books surprise me!
TWEET CUTE by Emma Lord
Tweet Cute by Emma Lord is the odd one out this month for me. I have only one other YA contemporary here, that is, Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe, but that book discuss about a lot of other things than just the romance part. On the other hand, Tweet Cute is mostly focused on romance.
Pepper is chronic over-achiever, she gets straight A's and an all rounder. Her secret is, she's the heiress of Big League Burger and runs their massive twitter account. Jack is often overshadowed by his twin brother who's more popular at school. He has this needling relationship with Pepper. Because Ethan is more a high-school person and Jack already helps running the Twitter account of their family business, their parents expect Jack to take the family business, in future, of the local deli – Girl Cheesing. Jack wants to develops apps, so he has this hate/love relationship with the deli. But then one day, he comes to know that Big Burger League has stolen their secret recipe of their grilled cheese, that ignites the Twitter War of 2020 between Pepper and Jack, who are unware of who's behind the other's account. Aside, from the tweets and real life interactions, these two meet at the dating app as well, which Jack created for their high school. The romance is everywhere in the air!
I think it's too much. Twitter and Dating App and Real life… three mediums! It might get annoying but I could take a risk. I am looking forward to it! I would guess this can be a 3.5 star book.
